2012 Was An Olympic Year For Chorley Silver Band

Well, as predicted 2012 really has been an Olympic Year for the Band.

We’ve had the usual run of parental concerts and summer engagements throughout June and July, travelling as far as Southport and Garstang. We also had our annual Whit Friday Walks trip to the Saddleworth area with our customary “30 bags of chips” on the way home.

However, we’ve also had some highlights too. In fact, two of them actually took place on one day, Friday 1st June. At 6.30am the A Band met in Chorley Town Centre to take part in a national Olympiad brass band activity called “Brass the Baton” were we played a specially commissioned piece of music whilst being conducted by Hector and one of five Olympic Ring coloured conductor batons. At the same time we were involved in the celebrations to welcome the Olympic Flame to Chorley by keeping the crowds (and miscellaneous crows) entertained whilst they were waiting.

Another highlight of the year was our long awaited trip to Belgium. Another early start of 6.30am on Saturday 11th August saw 43 very excited players, family and friends board a coach bound for the Eurotunnel and the Belgium town of Lo Reninge.

The trip included the Band playing in the Market Square at Ghent, the Last Post Ceremony at Ypres and on a Bandstand in Brussels. But don’t worry, it wasn’t all work; we also took a canal cruise through Ghent, visited Mini Europe and Bellewaerde Theme Park plus played lots of table tennis, sang, laughed and stayed up very late (you know who you are!)

Don’t worry if you missed out this time, we’re planning another trip for 2014. Further information will be available soon, including details of a savings plan to make it very affordable.
